HARRISON
BODYBOX
DEATH METAL
Atticus Hohman’s latest film, BODYBOX, turns its eye to the Orlando hardcore band Bodybox and its charismatic frontman, Harrison Brown. Another installment in the expanding web of Hohman’s short documentaries on Florida eccentrics, Bodybox presents a character study of Brown over the course of Bodybox’s tour of the American South. Hohman’s camera provides an intimate look into Brown’s world, mostly forgoing the typical excitement of Bodybox’s energetic live performances to instead capture Brown in the more mundane settings of hotel rooms and vans. Against these backdrops, Brown comes to life in perpetual monologue, waxing poetic (and crude) about life on the road, interpersonal relationships, and the quality of various bathrooms. As the tour comes to a close in Nashville, Brown’s final interview ends in a moment of honest self-reflection–“We’re not that cool… we’re cool at one thing and it’s this and that’s all we are good at… getting fucked up.”
Throughout the film, Brown’s barrage of armchair observations and half-told stories are met in stride by Hohman’s adaptive camera. Frenetic sequences complemented by quick-paced animation crop up just as often as thoughtful, lingering B-roll, keeping the viewer attentive and close to the rambling nature of the film.
